In 1923, at a race in Ravenna, Italy,Enzo Ferrari met Countess Paolina, mother of Count Francesco Barraca, a legendary ace of the Italian air force during WW I who was shot down and killed in combat and became a National hero. Barraca had painted a black stallion on his fighter plane, and the Countess asked Ferrari to paint a similar stallion on his race cars for good luck. At first, Ferrari used only the black stallion. Later he added the yellow shield background representing the official color of Modena, his birthplace. Eventually he added at the top of the yellow shield the three colored stripes representing the flag of Italy. The emblem usually has the letters S F at the bottom for Scuderia Ferrari.
